The simple version
Think of your dog's gut as a garden. The probiotic is the seeds: live bacteria you add. The prebiotic is the fertilizer: fiber the bacteria eat. The postbiotic is the harvest: the beneficial compounds the bacteria produce that actually do the work on your dog's body.
You cannot have a harvest without seeds and fertilizer. You can have seeds and fertilizer without much harvest, if the soil (your dog's existing microbiome) is rough.
Probiotics: the headliners
Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when given in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit. The strain matters more than the genus. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Lactobacillus acidophilus are different strains, and they have different effects.
The best-studied probiotic strains in dogs are Bacillus coagulans, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12, Lactobacillus plantarum 299v, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Enterococcus faecium SF68. Most dog probiotics use some combination of these.

Prebiotics: the fuel
Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that selectively feed beneficial gut bacteria. In dogs, the most common are inulin, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), galactooligosaccharides (GOS), and pumpkin fiber.
Without a prebiotic, the probiotic bacteria you add have to scavenge from the existing diet. With a prebiotic, you are giving them a direct food source. The result is faster colonization and longer survival.
Postbiotics: the new category
Postbiotics are the metabolites and cell wall fragments produced by probiotic bacteria. The best-known are short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate, which feed the cells of the gut lining itself.
Research in dogs is younger here. A few studies show benefits from butyrate supplementation in dogs with chronic enteropathy. But "postbiotic" as a category is still being defined, and product labels are inconsistent. For most dogs, the postbiotics produced inside their own gut from a good probiotic + prebiotic combination are what matters, not a separate postbiotic supplement.
Which one does your dog need?
Most dogs benefit most from a synbiotic product (probiotic + prebiotic combined). That is the format with the strongest evidence and the cleanest mechanism. A standalone prebiotic helps if your dog already has a healthy microbiome that just needs feeding. A standalone probiotic without prebiotic still works, just less efficiently.
A dedicated postbiotic supplement is reasonable for dogs with severe chronic gut issues who have plateaued on a probiotic. For most dogs, it is overkill.
