Why the strain matters

A probiotic is not just any beneficial bacteria. Each strain (a specific subtype within a species) has its own personality, its own preferred substrates, and its own clinical evidence. Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG are not the same. The latter is one specific, patented strain with decades of research behind it. Generic "L. rhamnosus" on a label tells you very little.

The strain naming convention is genus + species + strain identifier. For example: Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086 or Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12. If a label only lists genus and species (or worse, just genus), you do not know what you are getting.

The five strains worth knowing

Bacillus coagulans. Spore-forming, meaning it survives stomach acid and shelf storage better than most strains. Strong evidence for general stool quality and gas reduction.

Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12. One of the most-studied probiotic strains across species. Evidence for immune support, regularity, and reducing diarrhea duration.

Lactobacillus plantarum 299v. Particularly studied for gas, bloating, and IBS-type symptoms. Tolerates the canine gut environment well.

Lactobacillus acidophilus. A workhorse. Broad gut support. Less strain-specific evidence than some, but consistent benefits across small studies.

Enterococcus faecium SF68. The only probiotic strain with extensive canine-specific trial data (it is the active in Purina FortiFlora). Reduces stress diarrhea and supports immune function in dogs.

How to read a strain table

A good probiotic label tells you four things about each strain: genus, species, strain ID, and CFU. The table below is what a clear label looks like. Compare it to the back of the bottle next time you buy.

If the label says "5 billion CFU probiotic blend" without breaking out per-strain doses, you are buying marketing, not transparency. Walk away.

How many strains is enough?

Three to five well-studied strains is the sweet spot for most dogs. Above that, you usually see marketing rather than additional benefit.

The evidence base in dogs is concentrated in the five strains above plus a small handful of others. A 12-strain product is often the same five plus seven hangers-on with thin or no canine evidence.

If a product names three strains you recognize and shows real CFU per strain, that is a stronger label than a product naming 12 strains in a proprietary blend.

What to ignore

"Multi-strain blend" without naming strains. You cannot evaluate what you cannot see.

Strain count above 7 without per-strain CFU. Almost always marketing dilution.

Strains with no canine evidence. A handful of strains have human evidence but no canine evidence. They may or may not work in dogs. Stick with strains that have been studied in canines first.

"Live and active cultures" without specifics. A claim about quantity that says nothing about quality.
