Overview.

What it is. Salmon oil is extracted from the flesh and trim of salmon, then refined to remove impurities and concentrate the omega-3 fatty acids. EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are the two main bioactive omega-3s. Cold-water fish like salmon, sardines, and anchovies are the densest natural sources because they accumulate omega-3s through their diet of marine algae and smaller fish.

How it works. Dogs cannot make EPA and DHA efficiently from plant-based omega-3 (ALA). They have to get them from diet or supplementation. EPA and DHA work by competing with arachidonic acid in the membrane of immune cells. When inflammation triggers fire, EPA and DHA produce gentler signaling molecules (resolvins, protectins) instead of the harsher prostaglandins and leukotrienes that arachidonic acid produces. The result is calmer inflammation across joints, skin, gut, and the cardiovascular system.

Typical dose for dogs.

Small dogs (under 25 lbs): 300-500 mg salmon oil per day (about 100mg combined EPA+DHA)

Medium dogs (25–50 lbs): 500-1,500 mg salmon oil per day (about 250mg combined EPA+DHA)

Large dogs (50+ lbs): 1,500-3,000 mg salmon oil per day (about 500mg combined EPA+DHA)

Safety: Salmon oil is safe for most dogs at recommended doses. Very high doses can cause loose stool and may thin the blood — caution in dogs on anticoagulants or before surgery. Vitamin E is sometimes added to prevent oxidation; check the label. Watch for rancidity — fishy or sour-smelling oil should be discarded.

The single most evidence-backed supplement

If a dog can take only one supplement, omega-3 fish oil is the strongest single choice for most. Bauer published a comprehensive review in 2007 covering omega-3 benefits across joints, skin, cardiovascular health, and cognitive function in dogs. The breadth of effects from one ingredient is unusual. Roush and colleagues showed measurable improvements in weight-bearing and lameness in osteoarthritic dogs supplemented with fish oil over 12-24 weeks.

Joint-specific benefit

For joint inflammation specifically, EPA is the more important of the two omega-3s because it directly competes with arachidonic acid in the prostaglandin pathway. Studies show measurable reductions in inflammatory markers and improvements in mobility in dogs with osteoarthritis on EPA-rich fish oil. The effect builds over 8-12 weeks. Quality, freshness, and sourcing

Always buy from a manufacturer that tests for oxidation (TOTOX value) and uses dark bottles or sealed capsules. Wild salmon oil and sustainably farmed sources are both fine if the processing is good.
