Overview.
What it is. Lactobacillus plantarum is a lactic acid bacterium found naturally in fermented foods like sauerkraut and pickles, and also in the digestive tracts of mammals. The 299v strain was isolated from a healthy human gut at Lund University in Sweden and has been characterized in dozens of clinical trials. It is one of the most acid-tolerant Lactobacillus species, meaning a high percentage of the dose reaches the gut alive.
How it works. L. plantarum 299v binds to the gut wall through a specific protein called mannose-binding lectin. Once anchored, it physically occupies space that pathogens would otherwise use to attach. It also produces lactic acid, lowers gut pH, and releases compounds that strengthen the mucus layer protecting the intestinal lining. The mucus layer is one of the body first defenses against inflammation and food sensitivity.
Typical dose for dogs.
Small dogs (under 25 lbs): 1 billion CFU per day
Medium dogs (25–50 lbs): 2-3 billion CFU per day
Large dogs (50+ lbs): 3-5 billion CFU per day
Safety: L. plantarum 299v has a strong safety record in both human and animal studies. Mild gas during the first week is the most common observation. Not recommended for severely immune-compromised dogs without veterinary supervision.
Why 299v is the named strain
Strain naming matters. When a label says "L. plantarum 299v" rather than just "L. plantarum," it identifies a specific genetic lineage that has been studied as that exact organism. Nobaek and colleagues showed in 2000 that 299v reduced bloating and abdominal discomfort in IBS patients. Subsequent studies extended this to gut barrier function, iron absorption, and recovery from C. difficile. Generic plantarum from a bulk fermentation lot does not carry the same evidence.
How it survives the stomach
The dog stomach is highly acidic, with a pH near 1.5 to 2.5 during digestion. Most lactic acid bacteria are killed at this pH within minutes. L. plantarum has a built-in tolerance for acid that allows about 30-40 percent of a dose to survive transit to the small intestine, compared to under 10 percent for many other Lactobacillus species. That higher survival rate is why it is often used in capsules and chews that are not enteric-coated.
Pairing with prebiotic fiber
L. plantarum loves chicory inulin. The fiber gives it a substrate to ferment, which boosts colonization and short-chain fatty acid production.
