Overview.
What it is. Hemp is a variety of Cannabis sativa bred for fiber, seeds, and non-psychoactive compounds. In dog supplements, hemp shows up in two main forms. Hemp seed oil is pressed from the seeds and contains omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids plus some plant antioxidants — no significant CBD or THC. Hemp extract is made from the flowers and leaves and contains CBD plus other cannabinoids. The two forms are different products with different uses.
How it works. Hemp seed oil works through its fatty acid content, supporting skin, coat, and reducing inflammation similar to other plant oils. Hemp extract with CBD works through the endocannabinoid system, which is a network of receptors in the brain, immune system, and gut that regulate mood, pain perception, and inflammation. The effects are gentler than prescription medications but real, with growing canine clinical evidence.
Typical dose for dogs.
Small dogs (under 25 lbs): Hemp seed oil: 0.5 mL per day. CBD: 1-3 mg per dose
Medium dogs (25–50 lbs): Hemp seed oil: 1 mL per day. CBD: 3-9 mg per dose
Large dogs (50+ lbs): Hemp seed oil: 2-3 mL per day. CBD: 9-15 mg per dose
Safety: Hemp seed oil is very safe. Hemp extract with CBD is safe for most dogs but should not contain THC — make sure products are tested for THC content. CBD can interact with some drugs metabolized by the liver (CYP450 pathway) including certain anti-seizure medications. Always check with your vet if your dog is on prescription medication.
Hemp seed oil vs hemp extract — different products
This is one of the most confusing areas in dog supplements. Hemp seed oil is essentially a high-quality plant oil — fatty acids, antioxidants, no significant cannabinoids. It is sold widely, regulated as a food, and very safe. Hemp extract with CBD is a different product, made from different parts of the plant, with cannabinoid activity. Always read labels carefully and know which one you are buying. A product saying "hemp oil" without specifying could be either.
The CBD evidence in dogs is improving
Early canine CBD research has shown promising results for joint pain, seizure frequency, and anxiety. The Gamble study at Cornell in 2018 found that 2mg per kilogram twice daily reduced lameness and pain scores in dogs with osteoarthritis. The McGrath seizure study in 2019 showed some reduction in seizure frequency. Quality varies enormously between products — third-party testing is essential. The regulatory landscape is still evolving.
Realistic expectations
Hemp products are not magic. For mild anxiety or low-grade discomfort, they can take the edge off. For severe issues, they sit alongside prescription medication rather than replacing it. The biggest practical issues with hemp products are inconsistent dosing across brands, lack of third-party testing in cheaper products, and variable quality of starting material. Always buy from manufacturers that publish full Certificates of Analysis.
