What it is. Bifidobacterium animalis is a beneficial bacterium that naturally lives in the lower intestine of mammals, including dogs. The BB-12 strain is a specific variant developed and characterized over more than thirty years of research, with over 300 published studies on its safety and function. It is one of the few probiotic strains that has been studied directly in canine clinical trials, not just in humans and mice.

How it works. BB-12 anchors itself to the gut wall through specific surface proteins, where it produces short-chain fatty acids that feed the cells lining the colon. These cells, called colonocytes, depend on butyrate and other short-chain fatty acids for energy. By improving colonocyte health, BB-12 strengthens the gut barrier, which reduces the leakage of inflammatory compounds into the bloodstream. It also competes with pathogens for binding sites and nutrients.

Safety: BB-12 has Generally Recognized as Safe status and is one of the most extensively safety-tested probiotic strains. Adverse effects are rare and limited to transient gas in the first week. As with all live probiotics, avoid in dogs with severe immune compromise unless directed by a vet.
