Common health concerns for Shetland Sheepdogs
Shelties are sharp, athletic, and structurally healthier than many small to mid-size breeds. Hip dysplasia rates exist but are low. The defining genetic issue is MDR1 drug sensitivity, which affects how Shelties respond to certain prescription medications but does not affect supplement use.
Skin and coat issues come up, often tied to mild food sensitivities or environmental allergies. Hypothyroidism is the most common endocrine concern. Collie eye anomaly is a known ophthalmic issue in the breed.
