Supplements for Great Danes.

By PawBite editorial teamVeterinary review pending — every claim cites its study belowPublished April 1, 2026Updated May 15, 2026
Quick answer

Great Danes are giant, short-lived, and live with severe joint load and bloat risk from day one, which makes the Daily Duo essentially required. Start joint support in young adulthood at the upper-end dosing.

Quick facts for Great Danes.

Size: Giant

Typical weight: 110-175 lbs

Typical lifespan: 7-10 years

Common health concerns: Hip and elbow dysplasia, Bloat and gastric torsion, Dilated cardiomyopathy, Wobbler syndrome (cervical spinal issues), Severe senior arthritis

Dosing note: A 140 lb Great Dane takes 2 Daily Probiotic chews and 3 Hip and Joint chews per day. Underdosing is the most common giant-breed supplement mistake.

Common health concerns for Great Danes

The Dane is one of the most structurally challenged breeds in the world. Their size means every joint takes massive load, and hip and elbow dysplasia rates are high. Wobbler syndrome, a cervical spinal condition, is also overrepresented and shows up as neck pain and rear-end weakness.

Bloat is the single biggest acute risk for the breed. Deep-chested giant breeds have the highest gastric dilatation and volvulus rates of any dog group, and Danes are at the top of the list. Dilated cardiomyopathy is the major heart issue and is largely genetic.

Average lifespan is 7 to 10 years, one of the shortest among popular breeds, which means daily quality-of-life support matters even more, not less.

What supplements help

Hip and Joint is essentially required. Clinical glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM at proper giant-breed doses (3 chews per day at this weight) plus omega-3 and turmeric give a Dane the daily anti-inflammatory floor their joints need. The dose is the dose; underdosing a giant breed wastes the supplement.

Daily Probiotic supports digestion and reduces fermentation gas, which is one variable in bloat risk. Two chews per day at this weight. Probiotics are not a bloat preventative on their own, but they belong in the daily picture for any giant breed.

When to start

Probiotic from puppyhood. Hip and Joint by age 1.5 to 2 once growth plates are closed. Danes mature into their joint risk almost immediately, and waiting for symptoms means starting from far behind on a breed whose timeline is already short.
