Common health concerns for Australian Shepherds
Aussies are athletic, sharp, and structurally healthier than the average large or near-large breed. Hip dysplasia exists in the breed but at lower rates than retrievers or shepherds. The single most important genetic issue is MDR1, a drug sensitivity that affects how Aussies respond to certain prescription medications. It does not affect supplement use.
Food allergies and environmental atopic skin issues are common, especially in show and pet lines. Working Aussies tend to be structurally sound but accumulate joint wear from high-mileage herding and agility work.
